An artificial intelligence algorithm can accurately detect structural heart disease using only the single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor on a smartwatch, according to a preliminary study released by the American Heart Association. This is the first prospective study to show that an AI algorithm can detect multiple structural heart diseases, such as weakened pumping ability or damaged valves, from a common consumer device. The algorithm achieved a high performance score of 88% when analyzing smartwatch-derived ECGs from 600 adults.
