Alphabet and Meta Announce Massive Increases in AI Spending
Alphabet raised its 2025 capital expenditure forecast to $93 billion, while Meta signaled a significant spending jump for 2026.
A Capital-Intensive Arms Race
Two of the world's largest technology companies signaled that the capital-intensive arms race in artificial intelligence is accelerating. In their third-quarter earnings reports, both Google parent Alphabet and Meta Platforms announced they would sharply increase their spending on the infrastructure required to build and operate frontier AI systems. The combined spending plans underscore how access to vast, proprietary computing infrastructure has become a primary competitive advantage.
The announcements helped fuel a rally in the stock of Nvidia, the primary provider of that infrastructure, which crossed the $5 trillion valuation threshold on the same day.
