A landmark artificial intelligence bill in California, Senate Bill 53, advanced toward final votes in the state Assembly and Senate, Senator Scott Wiener's office announced on September 8, 2025. The bill was amended to align more closely with recommendations from a working group established by Governor Gavin Newsom, moving the state closer to establishing a concrete regulatory framework for advanced AI.
"Building on the Working Group Report's recommendations, SB 53 strikes the right balance between boosting innovation and establishing guardrails to support trust, fairness, and accountability," Senator Wiener said in a statement.
