GlobalFoundries Acquires Advanced Micro Foundry to Boost Silicon Photonics

GlobalFoundries (Nasdaq: GFS) announced the acquisition of Advanced Micro Foundry (AMF), a Singapore-based leader in silicon photonics. The deal positions GlobalFoundries as the largest pure-play silicon photonics foundry in the world by revenue.
The acquisition targets a specific physical bottleneck in the artificial intelligence infrastructure stack: data transmission. As AI models grow exponentially, moving data between chips using traditional copper wiring creates heat and latency issues. Silicon photonics uses light to transfer data, offering significantly higher bandwidth and energy efficiency.
