The OMAI Project

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and chipmaker Nvidia on Aug. 14, 2025, announced a combined $152 million investment to establish a national AI research project. The initiative, named the Open Multimodal AI Infrastructure to Accelerate Science (OMAI), will be led by the Allen Institute for AI (Ai2), a Seattle-based non-profit research institute. The five-year project is designed to create a "national asset" of open-source AI models specifically for scientific research.
