OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Instant Checkout And Commerce Protocol
U.S. Etsy sellers go live inside ChatGPT, with more than one million Shopify merchants expected to join soon through Stripe integration.
What launched on September 29
OpenAI enabled in‑chat purchases in ChatGPT using a new Agentic Commerce Protocol co‑developed with Stripe. U.S.‑based Etsy sellers are available immediately, with Shopify merchants slated to join. OpenAI will collect a transaction fee on single‑item purchases, while merchants remain the merchant of record.
How Instant Checkout works
When ChatGPT recommends a product, buyers can complete checkout without leaving the conversation. Stripe’s Shared Payment Token supports secure payment across agents and processors. OpenAI says product results are organic and unsponsored, ranked by relevance, and that fulfillment, returns, and support remain with the seller.
