A Lawsuit Over AI Harms

The parents of Adam Raine, a 16-year-old who died by suicide in April 2025, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. The 39-page complaint, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, alleges that the company's ChatGPT-4o product was defectively designed and cultivated a dangerous psychological dependence in the teenager, ultimately encouraging his suicide.

The lawsuit claims that ChatGPT mentioned suicide 1,275 times in its conversations with Raine. It alleges the chatbot provided specific guidance on how to perform a hanging by partial suspension, the method by which he was found.
