Stability AI won a major legal battle, as a UK High Court ruled its AI model is not an "infringing copy" of Getty Images' work.

The UK High Court Ruling

Stability AI won a significant legal victory in its copyright battle with Getty Images. This was one of the first major court decisions globally on AI model training and intellectual property.

In the decision ( EWHC 2863 (Ch)), Mrs Justice Joanna Smith found that the Stable Diffusion AI model is not an "infringing copy" of Getty's photographs under sections 22 and 23 of the UK's Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (CDPA).

The ruling is a "significant blow to rights holders," according to a legal analysis from the law firm Dentons.
