Wikimedia Deutschland on Oct. 1, 2025, announced the Wikidata Embedding Project, a new database designed to give AI models structured, open access to Wikipedia's vast knowledge base. The project aims to provide a high-quality, public data utility for the entire AI ecosystem, positioning verified knowledge as an open resource for the public good.
The initiative was explicitly framed as an alternative to the data models "monopolized by large corporations," according to Wikidata AI project manager Philippe Saadé. The project's announcement emphasized that this approach demonstrates that "powerful AI can be open and collaborative."
